Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin modus tollens.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin modus tollens mood that denies (1794 in the passage translated in quot. 1838) < classical Latin modus mode n. + tollēns , present participle of tollere to raise, take away (see tollent adj.). Compare modus ponens n.
Logic.
The rule of logic which states that if a conditional statement if p then q is accepted, and the consequent does not hold (not-q), then the negation of the antecedent (not-p) can be inferred; an argument using this rule. Also modus tollendo tollens. Cf. modus ponens n.
