释义

brothershipn.

Brit. /ˈbrʌðəʃɪp/, U.S. /ˈbrəðərˌʃɪp/
Forms: see brother n. and -ship suffix.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a word inherited from Germanic. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: brother n., -ship suffix.
Etymology: Originally (in Old English) cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian brōtherskip , Middle Dutch broederscap , brūderscap , brūderscep (Dutch broederschap ), Old Saxon brōtharskepi (Middle Low German brōderschap ), Old High German bruoderscaf , bruoderscaft , etc. (Middle High German bruoderschaft , German Bruderschaft ), Old Swedish brödhra skap , (in late sources) broderskap (Swedish broderskap ), Old Danish brødherskab , brødhreskab (Danish broderskab ) < the Germanic base of brother n. + the Germanic base of -ship suffix. In later use re-formed < brother n. + -ship suffix. In Old English the unprefixed form is only attested in Northumbrian glosses, but compare also (rare) Old English gebrōþorscipe , attested in West Saxon (compare y- prefix and also i-brotheren n.). In sense 2 originally after Dutch broederschap, and in later use after German Bruderschaft, in their specific sense ‘guild, fraternity’ (found already in Middle Dutch and Middle High German).
