Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish khokhem.
Etymology: < Yiddish khokhem wise, prudent < Hebrew ḥāḵām wise, prudent < the same Semitic base as Arabic ḥakīm learned person (see hakim n.2).The use as noun appears to show a development within English; Yiddish khokhem and its Hebrew etymon are also attested as nouns, but only in the sense ‘wise person, sage’.
