单词 touladi
释义

touladin.

Brit. /ˈtuːlədi/, U.S. /ˈtuləˌdi/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Forms:

α. 1800s toledi, 1800s tuladi, 1800s tulidi, 1800s– touladi, 1900s– touladie.

β. 1800s– touradi.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymons: French touladi, touradi.
Etymology: Apparently < North American French touladi, touradi (although this is first attested later: 1855), of uncertain origin.Borrowings (into French) from various North American Indian (chiefly Algonquian) languages have been suggested, but no likely etymon has been traced. Quot. 1846 suggests an early French pronunciation with // in the second syllable (compare also the rare French variant †tourédi ); this might imply that the usual French forms with a were themselves influenced by English. Place names. The following place names (in the Témiscouata region of eastern Quebec) are attested earlier than either the French or the English noun: Touladi Rivers (1814 in an English context), Lake Touladi , Touladi River (both 1836, on a map), and (compare the β. forms) the Touradi (1849 in an English context).
