释义

aieln.

Brit. /eɪ(ə)l/, U.S. /eɪ(ə)l/
Forms: Middle English aiell, Middle English ayele, Middle English ayelle, Middle English ayeul, Middle English eile, Middle English 1600s– aiel, Middle English 1800s– ael, Middle English–1600s ayel, Middle English–1600s ayell, Middle English–1700s ayle, late Middle English al (probably transmission error), late Middle English ay (probably transmission error), 1500s ayal, 1500s ayeull, 1800s aile.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aiel.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ael, aeel, aill, Anglo-Norman and Middle French aiel, Middle French aieul, ayel, ayeul (French aïeul , †ayeul ) grandfather (c1150 in Old French as aiuel ; now archaic), forefather, ancestor (beginning of the 13th cent. as aioel ; now chiefly in plural aïeux ) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *aviolus grandfather (compare the corresponding feminine form aviola grandmother (8th cent.)) < avius (8th cent.), variant (after the corresponding feminine form, classical Latin avia ) of classical Latin avus grandfather (see avital adj.) + -olus -olus suffix. Compare Old Occitan aiol grandfather (end of the 12th cent.). Compare besaiel n.The loss of the intervocalic -v- in French may pose phonological problems. It has been explained as reflecting a children's pronunciation; however, compare the same phenomenon in the French etymon of jail n., and see discussion in Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch XXV. at *aviŏla,*aviŏlus. In writ of aiel n. after Anglo-Norman and Law French bref d'ael (early 14th cent. or earlier).
