Forms: 1500s agerdows, 1600s eager douce, 1700s– aigre-doux, 1800s– aigre-douce (designating a woman, after the French feminine form); Scottish pre-1700 aigre douce.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aigre-doux.
Etymology: < Middle French, French aigre-doux (although this is first attested later: 1541; originally and frequently in figurative contexts) < aigre sour (see eager adj.) + doux sweet (see douce adj.). Compare earlier egerdouce n. and later agrodolce adj.
That combines elements of sourness and sweetness; simultaneously sour and sweet; bittersweet. Frequently of a sauce (cf. agrodolce adj.) and in figurative contexts. Also as postmodifier.
