Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French aiguille.
Etymology: < French aiguille needle (end of the 11th cent. in Old French in Rashi as agul ), sharply pointed peak (a1796 in this sense; for the semantic development compare needle n. 10) < post-classical Latin acucula (see acicula n.). Compare Old Occitan agulha, Catalan agulla (14th cent.), Spanish aguja (a1250), Portuguese agulha (early 11th cent. as †agulia), Italian aguglia (mid 13th cent. as †agulia), all in sense ‘needle’.
