Forms: 1800s pitoku, 1800s tetoki, 1800s– titoki, 1900s ti-toke, 1900s– ti-toki.
Etymology: < Maori tītoki.The form pitoku probably shows a transmission error; however, it may alternatively reflect a regional variant in Maori. N.E.D. (1912) gives the pronunciation as (titō·ki) /tiːˈtɔki/.
A large forest tree native to New Zealand, Alectryon excelsus (family Sapindaceae), having glossy pinnate leaves and fleshy red arils with shiny black seeds. Sometimes also: the timber of this tree. Also attributive.Also called New Zealand ash, New Zealand oak.
