Etymology: Partly (i) < Anglo-Norman taffata (14th cent.) and Middle French taffetas, tafetas, taphetas, tafeta, tafta (early 14th cent. in Old French; French taffetas ), and partly (ii) < post-classical Latin taffata, taffeta (from 14th cent. in British and continental sources), both ultimately < Persian tāfta linen garment, kind of silk cloth, use as noun of tāfta twisted, woven, shining, use as adjective of the past participle of tāftan to heat, to shine, to twist, to spin < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin tepēre to be warm (see tepid adj.).Compare Old Occitan tafata, tafatas, tafatan, Catalan tafetà (1330), Spanish tafetán (1348), Italian taffetà (1437).
