monoprionidian adj.Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: annelidian adj.
Etymology: < -idian (in e.g. annelidian adj., arachnidian adj. and n. at arachnid n. Derivatives, ascidian n., etc.). Compare -idan suffix. The ending -idian occurs from at least the early 19th cent. in a large group of scientific nouns and adjectives formed with the suffix -ian suffix, whose bases are either English plural nouns in -ida , or (more usually) scientific Latin plural nouns in -idae or -ides (see -id suffix3). These denote or designate members of specific taxa. In the second half of the 19th cent., -idian was used on the model of these to form a small number of technical adjectives in palaeontology within English: monoprionidian adj., diprionidian adj., and tetraprionidian adj. at tetra- comb. form 1.
