Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a Xhosa lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Zulu lexical item. Etymons: Xhosa abathakathi; Zulu abathakathi.

Etymology: Apparently an alteration of Xhosa abathakathi or its cognate Zulu abathakathi practitioners of magic collectively (see abatagati n.), after Xhosa ama- or Zulu ama-, a different plural class prefix. Compare slightly later abatagati n.
