Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French amervailler.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman amervailler, Anglo-Norman and Middle French amerveiller, Middle French admerveillier to wonder, marvel (at), be astonished (c1200 or earlier in Anglo-Norman as amerveliir ; often used reflexively), alteration of esmerveillier (see esmarvel v.) after a- a- prefix5 (and later also after classical Latin ad- ad- prefix: compare β. forms). Compare à merveille adv.
Obsolete.
transitive (passive). To be amazed; to marvel, wonder; to be surprised or astonished. Also intransitive in same sense.
