Origin: Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: mate adj.1; amated adj.
Etymology: Immediate origin uncertain; related to amate v.1 and amated adj. Perhaps (i) an alteration of mate adj.1, after Anglo-Norman amaté, amati downcast (late 12th cent.), use as adjective of past participle of amater , amatir amate v.1 Perhaps (ii) a variant of amated adj. with either assimilatory or analogical loss of the ending (compare adjectives in -ate suffix2).
Obsolete.
Overwhelmed; exhausted; disheartened, dismayed. Cf. amated adj.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French amatir, amater.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French amatir (also amater; French amatir ) to defeat (second half of the 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman), to humiliate (1202 in Old French), to cause to wither (1332) < a- a- prefix5 + matir , mater (see mate v.1). Slightly earlier currency is probably implied by amated adj. and perhaps also by amate adj.
Obsolete (archaic or poetic in later use).
transitive. To dismay, daunt (a person, the heart, the mind, etc.); to quell (a mood, emotion, etc.).In quot. a1821 in extended use: to cause (a flower) to wither.
