1. The condition of being supreme in authority, rank, or power; the position of supreme or highest authority or power.
a. With reference to the authority of the sovereign, spec. the position of the sovereign as supreme head of the Church of England or as supreme governor of England in spiritual as well as temporal matters. Act of Supremacy (also Supremacy Act): either of two Acts of Parliament of 1534 and 1559 (esp. the former), which established Henry VIII and Elizabeth I respectively as the supreme head of the Church of England and excluded the authority of the Pope. Oath of (the King's or the Queen's) Supremacy: the oath in which this is acknowledged.
