Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish noria.

Etymology: < Spanish noria (1280 as annoria), alteration (probably after acenia, variant of aceña watermill, or acequia irrigation channel) of nora (also anora, annora) < Arabic nāʿūra noria, waterwheel, probably < Aramaic (Syriac) nāʿūrā, probably originally in sense ‘spouter’ or ‘growler’ (with reference to the loud creaking noise made by the device). Compare French noria (1792).

Originally in Spain and Spanish-speaking countries but subsequently more widely, esp. in the East: a device for raising water from a stream or river, consisting of a chain of pots or buckets revolving round a wheel which take in water when submerged and discharge it when they turn over at the top. Cf. sakia n.
