Etymology: < Anglo-Norman supliant, Anglo-Norman and Middle French suppliant (adjective) submissive (beginning of the 13th cent. or earlier; c1175 in Old French as sospleiant ), (noun) petitioner (1340 or earlier), uses as noun and adjective of the present participle of supplier supply v.2 Compare supplicant n., supplicant adj.With the β. forms compare -ent suffix. With the γ. forms compare -and suffix1. In early use the word was sometimes stressed on the second syllable.
