Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin substrāmen.
Etymology: < classical Latin substrāmen bedding for animals, litter, materials laid down on rough ground to provide a smooth surface for vehicles < substernere (see substrate v.) + -men (see -ment suffix); compare strāmen straw (see stramineous adj.). Compare gluten n. 4.
Geology. Now historical and rare.
The groundmass or matrix of a concretionary rock.Quot. 1847 represents an isolated extended use.
