Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: support v., -ance suffix; French supportance.
Etymology: Probably partly < support v. + -ance suffix, and partly < Middle French supportance maintenance, sustenance (late 14th cent. in Anglo-Norman), suffering, permission, help, indulgence (all late 15th cent.) < supporter support v. + -ance -ance suffix. Compare earlier supportation n., support n., supportal n.
