单词 sugar-candian
释义

sugar-candiann.

Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: sugar candy n.
Etymology: Folk-etymological alteration of sugar candy n. after Candian n., reflecting misidentification of the second element of sugar candy with the place name (see Candy n.1). With the postpositive adjective in the resulting expression, compare e.g. treacle sovereign (see quot. 1597).Evidence for folk etymology. This folk-etymological tradition appears to have been relatively widespread outside English by the late 16th cent.: compare e.g. post-classical Latin sucura de candia (from 15th cent. in a British source, glossing Middle English sukyr candy) and also Middle Low German sucker van kandea, both literally ‘sugar from Candia’.
Obsolete.
= sugar candy n. 1.Apparently an isolated use, although in later editions of J. Taylor's Pennyles Pilgrimage (1618) sig. F 3 ‘Sugar-carrion’ (used as the type of something sweet-smelling) has been altered by editors to ‘Sugar-candian’.
