Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: ambrosia n., -ac suffix; Latin ambrosiacus.
Etymology: Either (i) < ambrosia n. + -ac suffix, or (ii) < post-classical Latin ambrosiacus, former reading (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions, at Pliny Nat. Hist. 14. 40, as ambrosiaca , where modern editions read ambrosia e ‘ambrosia from’) < classical Latin ambrosia ambrosia n. + -acus -ac suffix. Compare earlier ambrosial adj., ambrosian adj.1
