Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: ambrosia n., -al suffix1; Latin ambrosius , -al suffix1.
Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < ambrosia n. + -al suffix1, and partly (in sense 2) < classical Latin ambrosius belonging to the gods, divine, lovely, pleasant ( < ancient Greek ἀμβρόσιος immortal, divine, divinely excellent or beautiful: see ambrosia n.) + -al suffix1. Compare earlier ambrosian adj.1Compare classical Latin ambrosiālis , attested in an inscription, of uncertain sense and origin. In sense 3 after ambrosia n. 5. In form ambroseall after classical Latin ambroseus (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius).

a. Of food: delicious; exquisite; reminiscent of ambrosia (ambrosia n. 1a). Also of a taste: exceptionally sweet or delightful.In later use this is typically a weakened use of sense 2b. Quot. ?1578 could be interpreted as an instance of that sense.
