Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French ambros; Latin ambrosia.
Etymology: Originally < Anglo-Norman ambros, Anglo-Norman and Middle French ambrose wood sage (13th cent. or earlier in Anglo-Norman, 15th cent. in continental French: see ambrosia n.). In later use (in sense 2) < classical Latin ambrosia (see ambrosia n.), with omission of the ending. Compare earlier ambrosie n. and later ambrosia n.
1. Any of several European plants used in herbalism; esp. wood sage, Teucrium scorodonia, and sticky goosefoot, Dysphania botrys.
