Etymology: < Anglo-Norman *arb(e)leste, *arb(e)laste, Old French arbaleste (also arbeleste , arbaste , arblatt , modern arbalète ), cognate with Provençal arbalesta , albaresta < Latin arcuballista , < arcus bow + ballista military engine for throwing missiles (ballista n.). The forms in γ are due to popular association with arrow ; arbalet in 17–18th cent. is after modern French. As the word survives only in military antiquities, it has no standard modern spelling.
