Etymology: < Italian studiolo small private study decorated with works of art (1491 denoting Isabella d'Este's study in Mantua (compare quot. 1926), or earlier), writing desk, cabinet (a1574) < post-classical Latin studiolum private study (1447 in a source from Rome) < studium room for studying (see study n.) + -olum -olum suffix.
