Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Muriacit.

Etymology: < German Muriacit (attributed to N. Poda von Neuhaus in J. E. von Fichtel Mineralogische Aufsätze (1794) 228) < classical Latin muria (see muriatic adj.) + German -it -ite suffix¹ (so called because the mineral was originally thought to be muriated lime); the interpolated -c- is unexplained.

Anhydrous gypsum (anhydrite) in a crystalline form.The earliest analyses of muriacite suggested that it contained sodium chloride, calcium carbonate and sand in addition to calcium sulphate.
