Etymology: < post-classical Latin subarmale (4th cent.), use as noun of neuter of subarmalis, adjective (5th cent.) < classical Latin sub- sub- prefix + arma arms n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare French subarmale (18th cent., although most instances could instead be interpreted as showing references to the Latin word in a French context). N.E.D. (1914) gives the pronunciation as (sɒbaɹmēi·li) /sʌbɑːˈmeɪliː/.
