Etymology: < blue adj. + gum n.1 Compare slightly earlier blue-gummed adj.
U.S. slang (derogatory). Chiefly regional (southern and south Midland).
A black person having gums regarded as bluish in colour, esp. one with a very dark complexion. Frequently attributive.There was formerly a folk superstition that the bite of such people was poisonous.
