Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian pamjat′.

Etymology: < Russian pamjat′ (also transliterated pamyat′), literally ‘memory, remembrance, heritage’ (12th cent. in Old Russian in sense ‘memory’, early 1980s in the name of the organization), perhaps with conscious reference to its derivative pamjatnik monument, in connection with the organization's early aims and activities (see note).The organization was originally an unofficial union with the stated aim of preserving the Russian heritage (old buildings, monuments, culture, and the environment), but was involved in nationalist political activity from the mid 1980s. Following a demonstration by its members in Moscow in May 1987, a meeting of its representatives with Boris Yeltsin led to the organization's recognition as the Pamyat National (or Patriotic) Front.

1988 Independent 25 Nov. 9 Yuzef's, one of the few Jewish co-operative cafés in Moscow..was half empty. Word had spread that it was being terrorised by Pamyat, the Russian nationalist and overtly anti-Semitic association.
