Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pâmé.
Etymology: < French pâmé (c1050 in Old French as pasmede ), past participle of pâmer , †pasmer to swoon < an unattested vulgar Latin *pasmare for spasmare to have a spasm (4th cent.) < spasmus spasm n.With vulgar Latin *pasmare compare post-classical Latin pasmus (5th cent.), alteration of spasmus spasm n. The alteration may reflect dissimilation of -s- , or perhaps the influence of ancient Greek παλμός vibrating motion (see palmella n.).
Heraldry. rare.
As postmodifier. Of a fish: having a gaping mouth; (also occasionally) = langued adj.

1894 H. Gough & J. Parker Gloss. Terms Heraldry (new ed.) 259 The terms allumé (fr.)..and pamé (fr.), when the mouth is open, and the fish is as it were gasping, are applied by French heralds, but seldom, if ever, by English writers.
