Etymology: < the name of Alexis Benoît Soyer (1809–58), French chef who invented the device (see definition).Soyer came to England in 1830 where he initially catered to the privileged classes, often using innovative kitchen technologies; subsequently, he worked for famine relief in Ireland and with the British army in the Crimea, preparing food as well as developing equipment.

Chiefly in Soyer's stove or (later usually) Soyer stove.Originally with reference to a tabletop stove for domestic use, designed by Alexis Soyer in 1849 and marketed as his ‘magic stove’; subsequently usually with reference to a type of portable field stove which Soyer developed for use in the Crimean War (1853–6), and which continued to be used by the British Army for over a century.
