Origin: A borrowing from North Straits Salish. Etymon: North Straits Salish sc’áŋəs.
Etymology: < North Straits Salish sc’áŋəs, originally the self-designation of one particular group, subsequently extended to include other speakers of the same dialect.With the form Songese compare -ese suffix. In the forms Songhish and Songish by association with -ish suffix1. The form Songhi, although used as a collective plural, probably originated by reanalysis of the final -s as the English plural ending. The form Thongeith perhaps reflects the phonology of a particular variety of the North Straits Salish language, although it is uncertain which one.
