Etymology: < the name of Sīsyphus (see Sisyphean adj.) + -ism suffix, after French sisyphisme (1846 in the passage translated in quot. 18461). Compare Sisyphist n.
Endless, laborious, and ineffective labour like that of Sisyphus (see Sisyphean adj.), esp. as a characteristic of industrial conditions; (also) the view that industrial labour is of this nature.In quot. 1856: torturous punishment.Often used in connection with the writings of the French economist Frédéric Bastiat (1801–50).
