Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μονόϕθαλμος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μονόϕθαλμος one-eyed ( < μονο- mono- comb. form + ὀϕθαλμός eye: see ophthalmo- comb. form) + -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin monoptalmus , monophthalmus , adjective and noun (from 670 in British sources), French monophthalme , adjective (1840) and noun (1596 in Middle French). Compare monops adj., monopous adj.Jerome (see quot. 1865) uses the Greek word in a Latin context ( De Viris Illustribus 98).
