Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Simbil.

Etymology: < German Simbil ( A. E. Brehm Reiseskizzen IV. (1855) 130 (note) , with reference to observations of early 1848), of uncertain origin; it was reported to be < a language of what is now South Sudan, but no likely etymon has been traced.The work cited in quot. 1873 draws heavily on a later publication by Brehm. Brehm also cites a form Simbere (in an unspecified language in a German context) in a diary entry dated 12 Jun. 1850 (published in Journ. für Ornith. 4 (1856) 412); compare the following early translation of that passage into English:1868 J. H. Gurney tr. A. E. Brehm in Ibis 4 258 We disturbed their holy birds, ‘Simbere,’ and invoked the curse and punishment of heaven.
