Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French molybdoménite.

Etymology: < French molybdoménite (E. Bertrand 1882, in Bull. Soc. Minéral. de France 5 91) < ancient Greek μόλυβδος lead (see molybdo- comb. form²) + μήνη moon (see month n.¹) + French -ite -ite suffix¹.The mineral is named after its constituents, lead and selenium (the name of the latter being from an alternative Greek word for ‘moon’), perhaps after chalcomenite n. at chalco- comb. form .

A monoclinic oxide of lead and selenium occurring as thin colourless to yellowish-white scales.
