单词 molysite
释义

molysiten.

Brit. /ˈmɒlᵻsʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈmɑləˌsaɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μόλυσις , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μόλυσις stain + -ite suffix1 (see quot. 1868). Hellenistic Greek μόλυσις (also μόλυνσις ; rare; compare more common Hellenistic Greek μολυσμός , Byzantine Greek μόλυσμα ) is < ancient Greek μολύνειν to stain (probably a formation in -νυ- from an unattested adjective) + -σις -sis suffix. The statement in quot. 1935 as to the origin of the name is incorrect. In Atti d. R. Accad. d. Sci. Fis. e Matem. (1874) 6 ix. 43, Scacchi attributes the name molysite to Dana (in Syst. Mineral. (ed. 5)), and renders it in Italian as molisite so as to make it conform to Italian orthography, as he explains in Lo Spettatore del Vesuviano (1887).
Mineralogy.
Ferric chloride as a trigonal mineral, occurring as yellow to brownish or purplish red deliquescent encrustations in areas of volcanic activity, esp. near fumaroles.

1868 J. D. Dana Syst. Mineral. (ed. 5) 118 Molysite, Eisenchlorid... Chlorid of Iron. Molysite Dana. Incrusting. Color brownish-red, light or dark, and yellow... Noticed by Hausmann at Vesuvius in 1819..and by Scacchi in the same region.
1911 Encycl. Brit. XXVIII. 185/1 Ferric chloride, FeCl3, not infrequently occurs as a reddish or brownish yellow deliquescent incrustation, and because it thus colours the lava it has received the name of molysite.
1935 J. W. Mellor Comprehensive Treat. Inorg. & Theoret. Chem. XIV. lxvi. 41 A. Scacchi observed in recent eruptions a yellowish or brownish-red incrustation associated with the lavas of fumaroles or steam holes. The coloration was attributed to the presence of ferric chloride, FeCl3, and A. Scacchi called the mineral molisite, which J. D. Dana altered to molysite—from μόλυσις, a stain.
1968 I. Kostov Mineral. ii. iii. 195 Molysite FeCl3.
1996 Jrnl. Volcanol. & Geothermal Res. 71 73 The color bands are:..(c) dark green to green (anhydrite–halite..with minor amounts of molysite, soda and potash alum).
