Etymology: < German Molybdophyllit (G. Flink 1901, in Bull. Geol. Inst. Univ. Upsala 5 i. 91) < ancient Greek μόλυβδος lead (see molybdo- comb. form²) + ϕύλλον leaf, plant (see phyllo- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹; compare -phyllite comb. form.The first element of the name refers to one of the chemical constituents, the second to the foliate shape of the crystals.

Mineralogy.

A hydrous trigonal silicate of lead and magnesium occurring as colourless or pale green platy crystals.
