Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French serin.

Etymology: < French serin siskin (1478 in Middle French), canary (1555), probably ultimately < post-classical Latin sirena siren n., perhaps via Occitan; compare Old Occitan, Occitan serena green woodpecker (15th cent.; c1200 as cerena denoting an unidentified bird used for hunting), and also Old French sereyne (feminine noun) canary (end of the 13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation). With the semantic development, compare Byzantine Greek σειρήν small songbird (apparently only in Hesychius), extended use of ancient Greek Σειρήν siren n.

In early use: (perhaps) the canary, Serinus canaria. In later use: any of several other Old World finches of the genus Serinus (family Fringillidae), typically having yellowish or greenish plumage with dark streaks; spec. the small S. serinus of central and southern Europe and the Mediterranean (also more fully serin finch).
