释义

prostitutionn.

Brit. /ˌprɒstᵻˈtjuːʃn/, /ˌprɒstᵻˈtʃuːʃn/, U.S. /ˌprɑstəˈt(j)uʃ(ə)n/

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin prostitution-, prostitutio.

Compare Middle French, French prostitution debauchery (second half of the 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman), action of dishonouring oneself (1400–10), degrading use, profanation (1588), action of prostituting oneself for money (1611 in Cotgrave), also Spanish prostitución (end of the 15th cent.), Italian prostituzione (1598).In Branch II. apparently by confusion with prostration n., perhaps influenced by the shared association of debasement and humiliation.
