Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French prostituer; Latin prōstituere.
Etymology: < Middle French prostituer to dishonour (c1370; French prostituer ) and its etymon classical Latin prōstituere prostitute v. Compare Spanish prostituir (16th cent.), Italian prostituire (a1499), and German prostituieren (16th cent.) all in senses ‘to put to work as a prostitute’, ‘to debase (a person or talent), to put to unworthy use’ (used transitively and reflexively). Compare prostitute v.
Obsolete.
transitive. = prostitute v. 2b. Some of the examples given may be typographical errors for prostitute v., which actually occurs earlier in the passage cited in quot. 1530.
