单词 | seed cake |
释义 | seed caken. 1. A cake flavoured with caraway seeds, and generally sweetened. Cf. cake n. 2.The ‘seed cakes’ formerly eaten at country festivals celebrating the end of sowing-time may have been of this kind, though the custom's reference to seed n. is probably simply allusive. Warton's statement (quoted in the 1878 ed. of Tusser) that the name was applied to the festival itself seems doubtful; cf., however, quot. 1726.
