Etymology: < post-classical Latin scriptio plena (1680 or earlier) < classical Latin scrīptiō scription n. + plēna , feminine of plēnus full (see pleni- comb. form), after post-biblical Hebrew kĕṯiḇ mālē (second half of the first millennium). A style of spelling in Semitic languages (esp. Hebrew) in which vowel sounds are represented by letters which also represent (and originally represented) consonants.
