Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit premī.
Etymology: < late Sanskrit premī, nominative singular of premin imbued with love (in recent use also as noun in sense ‘fan, adherent’ and representing -phile comb. form), probably punningly after Prem Pal Rawat, given name of Guru Maharaj Ji (b. 1957; later known as Maharaji); compare -ie suffix.There is some evidence that the name was previously used in India to refer to the adherents of Prem Pal Rawat's father, whose name is not known.
Chiefly U.S.
A follower of the Guru Maharaj Ji, or of the religious organization Divine Light Mission founded by him.Following a schism, the Maharaj Ji's part of the movement was renamed Elan Vital in 1984.
