Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French premier (French premier ) first in a sequence or series (1119 in Anglo-Norman as primier; compare earlier primer primer adj.), earliest (1140 in Old French), first in quality (c1170), first or chief (1606 in premier président ) < classical Latin prīmārius of the first rank (see primary adj. and n.). Compare Old Occitan premier (a1126), primier (late 12th cent.). Compare earlier primer adj. (and the Romance parallels cited at that entry), primary adj., and later primar adj. Compare also première adj. and discussion at that entry.
