Etymology: < classical Latin scrīpulum, variant of scrūpulum scruple n.1, especially in the sense ‘small weight’, in post-classical Latin also in the sense ‘anxiety, doubt’ (8th cent. in a British glossarial source). Compare scruple n.1, scruple n.2In sense 1a ultimately translating Hebrew gērāh gerah n.
Obsolete.

a. A unit of ancient Hebrew weight, equal to one twentieth of a shekel (approx. 0.568 grams); = gerah n.In quot. a1382, half scripells is an error, perhaps caused by the statement in the preceding part of the verse that the temple tax amounts to half a shekel.
