Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cisaille.
Etymology: < French cisaille clippings of metal, waste metal (1324 in Middle French), clippers, scissors (13th cent. in Old French; < an unattested post-classical Latin noun formed on the same base as post-classical Latin cisoria : see scissors n.), with respelling in sc- as a result of association either with scissors n. or with classical Latin scindere scind v. (compare discussion at scissors n. and int.).In forms scissil, scissile probably by association with scissile adj.
Waste metal left over after a mechanical operation has been performed, esp. that left when a coin is cut out of a blank, which goes to waste if it is not remelted.

1998 D. White Extramural Sanctuary Demeter VI. iii. 51/2 To judge from their state of preservation, and the characteristic scissel which they retain throughout, they probably represent a single hoard.
