Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: hackney n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps representing a regional pronunciation of hackney n. (compare quot. 1782). Perhaps compare Gujarati chakṛo ox cart, although this is unlikely to be the immediate etymon for phonological reasons.
Anglo-Indian.
In India: a two-wheeled cart drawn by oxen, chiefly used to transport goods; a bullock cart. Also (esp. in western India and Sri Lanka): a light carriage, drawn by oxen or (occasionally) horses, used to transport people.
