scarryadj.3

Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymons: French eschari, escari.
Etymology: Perhaps aphetic < Old French eschari, escari inconsequential, poor, mean, few in number, sparsely populated, with a small entourage, deprived of (12th cent.) < an Old Low Franconian form corresponding to Old High German scerjan . However, the French original translated in quot. a1500 has Old French serrei , variant of serré compact (see serré adj.); it is possible that the English text ultimately shows some sort of confusion of this word.Perhaps compare English regional (East Anglia) scare lean, scraggy (1830).
Obsolete. rare.
