Etymology: < post-classical Latin Ruthenia (see Ruthenian n.) + -ic suffix. Compare French †ruthénique Russian (1608 or earlier; in later use also ‘Ukrainian’). Compare earlier Ruthene adj. and the German adjective cited at that entry, and also earlier Ruthenian adj.The following quot. almost certainly shows a different word, probably in sense ‘Runic’ (probably influenced in form by association with either Gothic adj. or perhaps post-classical Latin Rutheni (plural noun), the Latinized form of the name of a tribe formerly inhabiting the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea off the north-eastern coast of Germany):1635 T. Heywood Hierarchie Blessed Angells 611 A small staffe, inscribed with Gothicke or Ruthnicke characters.
