Etymology: < post-classical Latin Arroasia (from c1138 in French sources; French Arrouaise ), the name of a former abbey (of uncertain location, but probably situated in Picardy in northern France) + -an suffix (compare -ian suffix).The community originated as a hermitage in 1090. It was approved by the local bishop in 1097, elevated from priory to abbey in 1121, and eventually suppressed during the French Revolution in 1790. In later forms influenced by French; compare French arroasien (1784 or earlier as adjective and noun), arrouaisien (mid 19th cent. or earlier as adjective and noun), arroaisien (first half of the 20th cent. or earlier), arrouasien (late 20th cent. or earlier). Compare also post-classical Latin arroasiensis (from c1138 in French sources).
